Today I’d like to talk about how lawn fertilizer can play a role in algae growth in your pool. As we approach the summer months and the rainy season, pools will start using more chemicals. The three major factors that contribute to increased chemical usage are rain washout, the sun’s UV rays burning off chlorine, and increased swimmers. As the levels of free chlorine decrease, the chances of algae growth and other pool water contaminants increases. Now add lawn fertilizer to the mix. Spreading lawn fertilizer is a great way to keep your lawn and plants healthy and full or color. However, some of the fertilizer can become airborne and settle in your pool. It can also get introduced to your pool area by walking outdoors and then into your lanai area or even by your pets. The next rainfall will wash these fertilizer chemicals into your pool and create a food source for algae. The fix? Make sure your pool water is properly balanced and your disinfectant levels are sufficient. If you have a test kit, keep your pool water in the ranges listed below. Also, be sure to brush the entire inside surface of the pool once per week to dislodge any potential hotspots for algae to form. Ideal levels: Free Chlorine: 2 ppm to 4 ppm pH: 7.4 to 7.6 Alkalinity: 80 ppm to 120 ppm Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid): 40 ppm to 100 ppm
